"At the end of the line", after processing the paperwork
carefully, with the help of self-education material (including the
material in the previous segment, perhaps), you still could be faced with
an invoice balance that simply doesn't make sense. Don't throw up your
hands and say "I give up. They must be right. I will pay." I
have seen enough incorrect or questionable billing to advise you to
give yourself the benefit of the doubt and look for counseling help. In New York State I urge that you obtain the assistance
of a HIICAP volunteer counselor from the Health Insurance Information,
Counseling and Assistance Program, a program of the New York State
Office for The Aging, operating through a network of Area Agencies on
Aging. Call the NYS HIICAP HELP
LINE 1-800-701-0501 for the nearest HIICAP site. And for assistance outside NYS, visit
www.medicare.gov. on the web and select
“Helpful Contacts”, “State” and “General
Medicare Information” for phone numbers to call for assistance
from your State Health Assistance Program. You can also call 1-800-MEDICARE to
get the telephone numbers.
At the end of each Web page I will urge you to read the literature and
use the Web sites listed on the Resources Page as part of a
self-education program. There are also listed telephone numbers for
answers to specific questions and sources for one-on-one personal
assistance.
