Choice of Medigap Insurer Can Facilitate Paperwork

The attempt in this Medigap counseling session up to now has been to close the Medicare cost and coverage gaps as completely as possible with standard Medigap insurance or other insurance, such as employer or union retirement plans, to enable the clients to focus with clear minds on their medical care. There is yet another intrusion -- administrative and paperwork problems -- which I have discussed in the "Health Insurance Paperwork" segment on the Medicare Page. And, as I explained in that segment, the choice of a Medigap insurance company is key to facilitation of paperwork. First and foremost you want a Medigap carrier which has a crossover agreement with Medicare for the electronic transfer by Medicare of claim information to them.  Crossover relieves the insured from the responsibility of submitting claims to the Medigap insurance carrier, and I cannot over-emphasize the importance of this service in making health insurance paperwork a more manageable chore. I discuss crossover in further detail in the "Health Insurance Paperwork"
segment 07 on the Medicare Page. Secondly, in case of problems and information inquiries, you want a company you can contact promptly on the phone without the use of two or three menus. As important as price may be in the choice of an insurance company, I believe that the prime requisite is one which helps you through the morass of collecting health insurance benefits. We seniors should always remember that we are in the highest health risk part of the population -- that, at some time, health problems, with accompanying stress and anxiety may happen; and for those times we need the "clear mind" and freedom from paperwork intrusions.
